Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What track and field events can my child participate in?

A: The Houston Mavericks coaching staff will assess your athlete's skills and abilities, and they will be able to participate in one or more of the following events:

  • Sprinter running events: 100, 200, and 400 M Dash
  • Hurdles: 100/110 M and 300 M hurdles
  • Distance running events: 800 M, 1200 M, 1600 M (HS), 2400 M, and 3200 M (HS)
  • Relays (4x100 M; 4x200 M; 4x400 M)
  • Long, Triple, and High Jump
  • Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin

Q: I have never been to a track meet - how do they work?

A: The track meets we attend range from very small events up to very large events with hundreds of athletes! Large track meets may have mutiple heats for each event, and both track and field events can be going on simulateously - so paying attention to the schedule and announcements at each meet is important for parents and athletes! Also, we NEED parents to be ready to help: hauling equipment, setting up and taking down the team tents, making sure the athletes get to their events on time, timing races, help with raking jump pits, measuring discus and shots and jumps, and setting up hurdles.

Q: What time should I be at the race?

A: Your athlete should plan to arrive at the team tent at least 45 minutes to one hours before the race. Allow for extra time for parking, walking to the tent area, and some cushion for rolling starts. This allows ample time to lace up the shoes, warm up with your teammates, get your racing bibs on, go to the bathroom, get to the starting line, and received last minute race instructions.

Q: What are my payment options?

A: Our new registration system allows you to pay using a debit/credit card (for an additional fee) or using your checking account. You can pay the full amount at the time of registration, or in multiple installments. However, if you prefer to pay using another method, please speak with Coach Reagan or David McClelland.
